Seven years ago, I was a sophemore in high school. All I had to worry about were my grades, how my hair looked, and keeping up with the latest fashion trends. I had no worries. I did that. My grades were fabulous and I didn't even have to try. I could take a test without paying attention to the whole chapter.. Ok maybe that's a little too far.. but ya get my point. I took AP classes, If you don't know what AP is, it's Advanced Placement. In my school first period was always study hall, band, or chorus. Some AP classes took place also. My AP history class fell during first period. We weren't far into the school year. It was the third week of school. We were still getting used to our classes and teachers. I knew my teacher personally so I didn't have an issue with her. I knew what i had to do that day and got snappin' on it the second I walked into the room. The period was almost over when it hit.
The teachers were to turn on their tv's that were in their rooms. Our school is poor and has shitty tv's. But they work. They did the purpose. I think their was like five minutes left in the period. They were told to turn to CNN. Being in AP History, this was something important. We all sat there. We stayed in our same classrooms for three periods just watching the news. We finally continued on with our day. It was hard for some of the teachers. They had family, friends, family of friends or whatever in New York. They didn't know if they were ok. Or if they weren't. So it was a blah day. I went home that night and watched the news with my family. I hated the news. I was never a fan of it. But that day I was.
Here we are, seven years later. I will always remember the attack on 9/11. I believe we should have off school and work when it falls during the week. We have off for Martin Luther King Day. We have off for when Presidents die. Why can't we have off when hundreds of people die because we were attacked by another country? Some things don't make sense. We should also have off for Pearl Harbor Day!
Now that I'm back in the high school, I get to watch Channel 1. It's a teen news that's shown in middle schools and high schools. It discusses some interesting topics. When I was in high school, if we talked, we were dead. Not anymore. I walk through the hallways and all the student's are yappin' away. It's a waste of time. My teacher makes our homeroom watch it. They didn't mention much on it today. It was more about that big science experiment in Switzerland or wherever it is. That one that people think could end the earth. What is that thing even for? We did have a moment of silence. It wasn't at the right time. But we did. And the whole school was quiet. Usually I can hear the students in the homerooms around us but nothing. No footsteps. No coughs. No sneezes. Pure silence.
Where were you on 9/11?
